Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic candidate for vice president in 2024, has decided to end his campaign for a third term as governor due to the ongoing focus from President Donald Trump on a fraud investigation involving the state’s child care programs.

Just months after launching his reelection bid, Walz announced on Monday that the negative attention and Republican criticisms have created an “extraordinarily difficult year” for Minnesota. He emphasized that every moment spent on his political campaign detracts from his responsibility to protect the citizens of Minnesota from criminal activities and divisive rhetoric.

“Every minute that I spend defending my own political interest would be a minute I can’t spend defending the people of Minnesota,” he stated at the state capitol. After his address, which lasted about seven minutes, he did not take questions from the media.

Walz criticized Trump and his supporters for attempting to make Minnesota a less welcoming place, citing the withholding of funds for state programs and attacks on the Somali immigrant community. He stated that these actions aim to sow discord among residents and undermine the state’s reputation as a great place to raise a family.

His withdrawal from the race reshapes the political landscape in Minnesota, where Democrats currently hold 24 of 50 governorships nationwide. The upcoming elections in 2026 will see 36 governorships, including Minnesota’s, contested.

Potential candidates to replace Walz include Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar, who is considering a run but has not yet made a decision. Approximately a dozen Republicans are already in the race, including MyPillow founder Mike Lindell and Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth.

During his tenure, Walz championed a progressive agenda that included significant protections for abortion rights and support for families. He was chosen by Kamala Harris as her running mate for the 2024 presidential election after his pointed criticisms of Trump gained traction.

Reactions to Walz’s announcement reflect the intense political divide in the state. Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin praised Walz’s commitment to public service, while Republican House Majority Whip Tom Emmer dismissed his departure as “good riddance.”

Throughout his governorship, Walz navigated a divided legislature, responding to crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and civil unrest following George Floyd’s death. His administration has made significant strides in areas such as abortion rights, gender-affirming care, and school meal accessibility. However, he has faced challenges in pushing for new gun control measures after a tragic shooting incident in Minneapolis.
