Rights group VOCAL Africa is calling for an urgent, intelligence-led response after five people were killed in an ambush in Gotu, Isiolo County.

Five lives lost in Isiolo as banditry again puts northern communities on edge

GOTU, Isiolo — The latest violence in Isiolo has left five families mourning and renewed questions about how long communities in northern Kenya will continue living with the threat of armed banditry.

Five people were killed in Gotu on Wednesday after a group pursuing suspected livestock thieves was ambushed by armed attackers. The victims included two Anti-Stock Theft Unit officers, a National Police Reservist and two civilians, according to police reports. 

The attack has drawn a strong response from VOCAL Africa, which is calling on the government to move beyond reactive security responses and address what it describes as a wider crisis involving banditry and illegal firearms.

A community caught in recurring violence

The attack happened as security personnel and others were pursuing suspected livestock thieves. The assailants fled before responding security officers arrived, according to police.

The deaths have added to growing concerns over insecurity along the areas linking Isiolo, Samburu and Meru counties, where livestock theft and armed violence have repeatedly affected communities.

VOCAL Africa said the Gotu killings should not be viewed as an isolated incident. The organisation described the wider situation as a pattern of armed violence that has made insecurity part of everyday life for communities in the region.

For families who depend heavily on livestock and pastoral livelihoods, such attacks can have consequences well beyond the loss of life. Fear can restrict movement, disrupt livestock trade and make it harder for people to access markets, schools and other services.

Calls for a different security response

VOCAL Africa is asking the government to establish what it describes as an immediate, rights-respecting and intelligence-driven operation to identify and prosecute those responsible.

The organisation is also calling for permanent and adequately resourced security posts and coordinated patrols along the Isiolo-Samburu-Meru borders.

It wants authorities to target not only individual attackers but also the networks and illegal firearms that enable recurring violence.

The group has further called for compensation and long-term welfare support for families of those killed.

Leaders also demand action

The calls from VOCAL Africa come alongside demands from local political leaders for stronger government intervention.

Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo described Gotu as a security hotspot and called for urgent intervention following the killings. Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo also condemned the attack and called for increased patrols and intelligence gathering.

The government has already deployed security operations in several northern counties under Operation Maliza Uhalifu, which includes Isiolo, Meru, Samburu, Marsabit, Baringo, West Pokot and Turkana.

Yet the latest attack illustrates the difficulty of containing violence across a region where suspected livestock raiders can move through county boundaries.

The human cost of insecurity

The five deaths in Gotu come just a day after another deadly livestock-related incident in neighbouring Meru County.

On September 15, a herder was shot during a cattle theft incident in Igembe Central after more than 120 cattle were reportedly stolen. The injured man later died from excessive bleeding while receiving treatment.

Taken together, the incidents point to the continuing human and economic costs of insecurity across the northern frontier.

For residents, the issue is not simply about police operations or government statements. It is about whether families can move with their livestock, work their land, travel between communities and return home without fear.

VOCAL Africa’s appeal comes down to a question that communities in Isiolo and neighbouring counties have raised repeatedly: when will security interventions become strong enough to prevent the next attack rather than respond after another family has lost someone?

For now, Gotu is left to mourn five more lives while the search for those responsible continues.
