Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara resigned following allegations that he interfered with an internal investigation into claims regarding his conduct, marking a major leadership shake-up for the city’s police department.

The resignation comes after an external investigation concluded that O’Hara likely interfered with a probe examining allegations that he had inappropriate relationships with city employees. While investigators reportedly did not substantiate claims of sexual relationships, they found evidence suggesting he interfered with the investigative process, including allegations that he deleted contact information from his city-issued phone and discussed the ongoing investigation despite being directed not to do so.

Mayor Frey Says Trust Was Broken

Jacob Frey announced that O’Hara resigned rather than face disciplinary action that could have included termination.

According to city officials, the findings raised serious concerns about leadership integrity at a time when public trust in the Minneapolis Police Department remains under intense scrutiny following years of reform efforts after the 2020 killing of George Floyd.

Mayor Frey emphasized that Minneapolis’ police chief must meet the highest ethical standards, especially as the department continues operating under reform mandates and public oversight.

O’Hara’s Mixed Legacy

O’Hara was appointed in 2022 as Minneapolis’ first outside police chief in more than a decade, tasked with helping rebuild confidence in a department deeply affected by controversy and reform demands.

During his tenure, he was credited with:

  • Leading recruitment and staffing stabilization efforts
  • Advancing police reform initiatives
  • Working to reduce violent crime
  • Navigating high-profile public safety challenges across Minneapolis

However, his resignation now overshadows many of those accomplishments and raises fresh questions about accountability within city leadership.

What Happens Next

Katie Blackwell will serve as interim chief while the city begins the search for a permanent replacement.

The sudden departure adds uncertainty to Minneapolis’ ongoing public safety transformation and could reignite political debate over police reform, departmental oversight, and leadership transparency.

For many Minnesota residents, the resignation represents another reminder that rebuilding trust in Minneapolis policing remains an unfinished challenge.
