At Least 18 Dead After Mass Migrant Crossing at Spain-Morocco Border

At least 18 migrants have died after a massive attempt to cross from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, triggering one of Europe’s worst border crises in recent years and prompting Spain to reinforce security along its only land frontier with Africa.

Spanish and Moroccan authorities tightened border controls on Friday after an estimated 49,000 people attempted to enter Ceuta within 24 hours, overwhelming local security forces and emergency services. Many migrants entered by swimming around border barriers or scaling the heavily fortified fence separating the Spanish territory from Morocco.

Officials said most of the fatalities occurred at sea, where migrants drowned while attempting to reach the enclave, while others were killed in a stampede as thousands surged toward crossing points. Rescue teams continued searching coastal waters as authorities warned the death toll could rise.

The humanitarian emergency has stretched Ceuta’s limited resources beyond capacity. Thousands of new arrivals, including families and unaccompanied children, have been forced to sleep in parks, sports facilities and temporary shelters as authorities struggle to provide food, water and medical care.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez travelled to Ceuta on Friday as the government deployed additional police officers and military personnel to restore order. Madrid also announced closer coordination with Moroccan authorities to stem further crossings and accelerate the return of migrants who entered irregularly.

The crisis has also sparked political tensions across Europe. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for Spain’s temporary suspension from the Schengen free-travel area, arguing that the unprecedented influx could have consequences for migration across the European Union. Spanish officials rejected the suggestion, insisting the situation was being managed in accordance with European law and humanitarian obligations.

Ceuta and the nearby Spanish enclave of Melilla form the European Union’s only land borders with Africa and have long served as flashpoints for irregular migration. However, the latest surge is believed to be the largest ever recorded, eclipsing the 2021 migration crisis that drew international attention to the territory.

Authorities in both Spain and Morocco have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the mass crossing, while humanitarian organizations have called for greater protection of migrants and a coordinated international response to prevent further loss of life.
