FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing one of the most serious challenges of his decade-long leadership after senior football officials from Europe, Asia and North America threatened to “paralyse” the world governing body through coordinated non-cooperation unless he steps down.

The growing revolt follows the collapse of Infantino’s controversial proposal to sell a stake in the commercial rights of future FIFA tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, to private investors—a plan that triggered widespread criticism over transparency and governance.

Football Leaders Plan Governance Boycott

According to reports, opponents are considering a coordinated campaign of non-cooperation that could include refusing to participate in FIFA committees, council meetings and governance activities. While the full scope of the boycott has not been finalized, officials say the objective is to increase pressure on Infantino to resign ahead of the FIFA presidential election scheduled for 2027.

The campaign is reportedly being led by senior figures within UEFA, with support emerging from members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF, signaling an unprecedented alliance against the FIFA president.

World Cup Investment Plan Sparked Backlash

The crisis stems from FIFA’s abandoned proposal to create a commercial entity that would have sold approximately a 20% stake in the commercial rights of major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, to private investors for an estimated $4.2 billion.

Critics argued that the plan was developed without sufficient consultation with FIFA’s member associations and risked placing football’s most valuable competitions under outside commercial influence. Facing mounting opposition, Infantino withdrew the proposal last week.

Legal Threats and Calls for Accountability

The dispute has expanded beyond political opposition. UEFA has warned it could pursue legal action over the failed investment proposal and has instructed FIFA executives to preserve documents related to the project, citing concerns over governance and decision-making.

Several national football associations, including the Football Associations of England and Wales, have reportedly withdrawn their endorsements of Infantino’s bid for another term, reflecting growing dissatisfaction with his leadership.

Infantino’s Support Under Pressure

Although Infantino continues to retain backing from many football associations in Africa and South America, recent developments have weakened what was once considered overwhelming support.

The controversy has transformed the upcoming FIFA presidential race into the most competitive contest since Infantino first took office in 2016. Football leaders are now reportedly discussing alternative candidates while exploring governance reforms aimed at reducing the concentration of power within FIFA’s presidency.

Future of FIFA Governance in Question

The dispute highlights growing divisions within international football over transparency, commercial strategy and institutional governance. While FIFA has defended its efforts to modernize and diversify its revenue streams, opponents argue that major structural decisions require broader consultation with member associations.

As pressure continues to mount, the coming months are expected to determine whether Infantino can rebuild support or whether the coordinated campaign by rival football confederations will reshape the leadership of world football.
